After the 'Battle of Barking Creek', Bushell defended John's case at Bentley Priory, from which he was rightly acquited. Bushell was later the man responsible for organising the Great Escape. Upon being recaptured he was murdered by the Gestapo on the 29th March 1944. The Luftwaffe-run prisoner of war camp, Stalag Luft III was located near Sagan or Zágán, Silesia, in present day Poland. The East compound was opened in April 1942 to hold prisoners of all Allied air forces.
